Boulevard Neighborhood
The Boulevard Neighborhood, in the northwest corner of Shaker Heights is adjacent to Boulevard Elementary School. Filled with gracious homes and tree-lined streets, the area is just minutes away from Shaker Square and University Circle in Cleveland. The neighborhood association, the Boulevard Community Association fosters communication among residents, the City of Shaker Heights and other organizations. Apartment and Condo Corridors
 View the 2010 Apartment Hunter’s GuideThere are more than 4000 apartment and condominium units located in the Shaker Square area. Many of the apartment and condo buildings offer distinctive architectural details as well as hardwood floors and lead glass windows. The variety of housing options available throughout the Apartment and Condo Corridors meet a range of needs from the young person looking for their first apartment to empty nesters interested in downsizing to a condo.

Larchmere Neighborhood
This unique neighborhood north and west of Shaker Square, includes the Larchmere business district with its eclectic mix of shops and services, a variety of housing options and schools, plus Fairhill Center—a resource for senior services. Housing stock is a mixture of single-family and ‘Cleveland Doubles’ with their distinctive two-story front porches. The Larchmere Community Association meets on the first Wednesday of the month at Fairhill. The LCA distributes a monthly newsletter to all homes in the area. Membership information is included with every issue.

The Connection

SHAD publishes a neighborhood newspaper on a quarterly basis throughout the year. With a circulation of nearly 10,000, The Connection updates the community on SHAD’s latest actvities and assistance programs, and helps promote the desirability of living, working, and shopping in the Shaker Square area.

Shaker Square

Shaker Square CinemasShopping is within walking distance from the apartments that ring Shaker Square. Shaker Square opened in 1929 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The renovated Shaker Square boasts a multi-plex cinema, full-service grocery and drug stores, a variety of restaurants and service and specialty shops.
Access to downtown Cleveland and Tower City is only 15 minutes via Rapid Transit. Shaker Square is only ten minutes by car or bus to world-renowned University Circle. University Circle is home both to University Hospitals and the Cleveland Clinic, as well as Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Larchmere
Just one block north of Shaker Square is Larchmere Boulevard, known as Cleveland’s ‘Art & Antiques District.’ It is home to a remarkable assortment of art and antique shops. These are complemented by an outstanding variety of restaurants, crafts, books, clothing, and service businesses which attract both local and regional shoppers.

Drexmore / Chadbourne Neighborhood
Surrounding Plymouth Church, this neighborhood is comprised of the Cleveland portion of these two streets. They are in the Shaker School system. Drexmore/Chadbourne is part of the broader Boulevard Community Association which has an e-newsletter which is sent out as news warrants.

CHALK Neighborhood
Named for the streets—Cormere, Haddam, Ardoon, Larchmere, Kemper—CHALK is a community of comfortable colonial homes just north of Shaker Square. They are in the Shaker School system. The community celebrates Memorial Day each year with an organized potluck picnic. In 2008, they added an Easter egg hunt for the youngsters.

Ludlow Neighborhood
The Ludlow Community Association celebrated its 50th anniversary in fall 2007. This historic community encompasses both Cleveland and Shaker Heights, defined by the houses in the Shaker School District. Ludlow is roughly bounded by So. Moreland, Van Aken, Onaway, Livingston. The Ludlow School, the original focal point of the community, is still used for LCA meetings on the second Tuesday at 7:30pm and the fourth Saturday at 10:30am.

Greater Circle Living
Greater Circle Living offers down payment assistance to employees of University Hospital, Cleveland, Clinic, and Case Western Reserve who purchase property in several neighborhoods in Cleveland. The Shaker Square and Larchmere neighborhoods of SHAD’s service area are eligible neighborhoods for the program.

Legacy Programs
Rental Connection Information Service
SHAD provides a one-stop, apartment listings service for prospective tenants interested in renting a unit in the Shaker Square area. Nearly 400 clients used this information and referral service during the past year. SHAD also publishes an annual Apartment Hunters’ Guide to Shaker Square that is distributed to area colleges and employment centers.
The Connection
SHAD publishes this award-winning, neighborhood newspaper on a quarterly basis. With circulation of 7,500, The Connection updates the community on SHAD’s latest activities and assistance programs, and helps promote the desirability of living, working, and shopping in the Shaker Square area.
Larchmere Merchants Association
SHAD serves as the administrative agency for the Larchmere Merchants Association. This Association coordinates the marketing and promotion of the Larchmere Blvd. commercial district, sponsors special events, and responds to issues that affect the vitality of the street.
Landmark District Design Review
SHAD administers the local Design Review Committees for both the Shaker Square Historic District and the Larchmere Blvd. Business Revitalization District. Fifteen proposals for exterior alterations were reviewed for design compatibility during the past year.
Neighborhood Security Patrol
A subscription program using licensed security guards to patrol the Shaker Square apartment corridor and the Larchmere Business Revitalization District. SHAD contracts for this patrol with the Securitas Corporation.

Code Enforcement
SHAD works closely with City inspectors to promote responsible building maintenance, and monitors court proceedings concerning problem properties within our service area. SHAD also conducts a minimal standards inspection of apartment buildings whose owners desire to use our Rental Connection referral service.

Continuing Initiatives
Larchmere Blvd Retail District Streetscape and Landscaping
Shaker Square Area Development Corporation(SHAD) received a federal transportation enhancement grant of $587,000 for streetscape and landscaping improvements in the Larchmere Blvd Retail District.The Board of the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency(NOACA) formally approved the grant on Friday December 11, 2010.
Larchmere South Curb-Appeal Program
SHAD created this targeted, matching grant program to assist owner-occupants of distressed homes complete highly visible, exterior repairs to their properties. The program emphasizes painting, front porch, driveway and landscaping improvements. Five houses were completed this past year.
Cleveland Housing Network
SHAD partners with this citywide organization for the provision of renovated and newly constructed, affordable housing. A renovated house on Ashwood Road was sold in early 2007.
Storefront Renovation Program
SHAD serves as a contract agency for this City program that provides financial incentives for the comprehensive, exterior renovation of commercial properties. The renovation of a storefront located at 12307 Larchmere was completed this year, with 2 additional renovations under contract for 2008.
Uptown Traffic Plan
SHAD is the administrative agency for the Uptown Traffic Committee, a coalition of major stakeholders advocating for a set of 5, City-approved, roadway modifications for improving traffic flow and safety in the Fairhill–Shaker Blvd.- Buckeye Rd. corridor.
Shaker-West Professional Building (11811 Shaker Blvd.)
SHAD completed the $1.7 million renovation of this 50,000 square foot office building in order to demonstrate the potential that exists for underutilized commercial properties on Shaker Blvd. West. SHAD continues to own and manage this property.

SHAD Service Area
A feeling of neighborhood in a cosmopolitan setting describes the Shaker Square Area. It’s a neighborhood rich in diversity: racially, economically and socially. This variety makes it special and unique.
The area is anchored by Shaker Square — the second oldest shopping center in the nation.

RTA Rapid TransitIn a great location, Shaker Square is 15 minutes to downtown Cleveland and Tower City via RTA Rapid Transit; 10 minutes by car from world-renowned University Circle and its medical, educational, cultural and religious institutions; and 35 minutes to Hopkins International Airport via RTA Rapid Transit.
Shaker Square Area Development Corp.‘s Service Area constitutes a one square mile area in the City of Cleveland, bordered by Shaker Heights and Cleveland Heights. It is home to 11,000 residents, many of whom live in the 4000 apartment/ condominium units. There are also 1500 one- and two-family homes. The area consists of the Shaker Square/Ludlow Historic District, the Larchmere neighborhood, and the apartment and condo corridors..

The Rental Connection, a free rental information and referral service of Shaker Square Area Development Corp. (SHAD). The service provides a listing of vacancies in the Shaker Square apartment district, as well as the Larchmere and Ludlow neighborhoods. These range from efficiencies to three-bedrooms to half of a double house. The listing is constantly updated with the prices as well as amenities.
